Magnolia couple showing work together for first time

The Rocky Neck Art Colony will host a landmark exhibition of two of Cape Ann’s artists, Anna Vojtech and Roland Cornelis, who are wife and husband.

The exhibition features abstract wood sculptures by Cornelis and paintings by Vojtech. This joint exhibition runs through March 31. A free public reception will be held Saturday, March 23, from 4 to 8 p.m. There also will be a meet-the-artists event on Saturday, March 30, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Cultural Center Gallery at 6 Wonson St. on Gloucester’s Rocky Neck.

This Magnolia husband and wife are showing together for the first time in their 43-year personal history. The show brings out the tethers that pull from each artist and informs the other’s work.

While the show is only up for two weeks, it is one of Rocky Neck Art Colony’s first shows with larger sculptural elements since the colony started year-round programming.

About Anna Vojtech: She was born in Prague in 1946, and studied at the Academy of Applied Arts in Prague, the Royal Academy in Antwerp, Belgium, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg, Germany. She worked as a freelance artist in the animation department of the Nation Film Board of Canada and for other film companies. Anna has illustrated many books for children and is a spiritual artist whose work is inspired by nature. She works in her Cripple Cove Studio in Gloucester.

About Roland Cornelis: Born in Wurzburg, Germany in 1946, he grew up in Albany, Ohio, and studied anthropology and political studies at Bonn and Heidelberg universities in Germany. He received his Master of Arts in Germanistik from McGill University and taught German and English in Quebec for six years before returning to the United States with Anna and their two sons. Roland has been a carpenter and builder for the last 30 years and began sculpting wood three years ago. His sculptures are inspired by nature and are imbued with a sense of humor. Cornelis sculpts in his studio at the couple’s home in Magnolia.
