An award-winning documentary about climate change comes to Cape Ann as a special benefit event for Maritime Gloucester.
On Sunday, the screening of “Chasing Ice” will be held at Cape Ann Community Cinema at 21 Main St. in Gloucester as a benefit for the seaside museum.
“Chasing Ice” has won 23 awards at film festivals around the world, including an award for Excellence in Cinematography: U.S. Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival, and 10 audience favorite awards at another 10 film festivals. The film’s original song, “Before My Time,” is an Academy Award nominee for best original song. The music and lyrics are by J. Ralph, and is performed by Scarlett Johansson and Joshua Bell.
“My understanding is the cinematography is extraordinary,” said Tom Balf, executive director of Maritime Gloucester. “It strikes me that it would be of interest to folks in a town like Gloucester and all of Cape Ann because we are so connected to the natural resources around us.”
The film was conceived in the aftermath of a 2005 trip by noted environmental photographer James Balog, who traveled to the Arctic on assignment for National Geographic to capture images to help tell the story of the Earth’s changing climate.
“Even with a scientific upbringing, Balog had been a skeptic about climate change. But that first trip north opened his eyes to the biggest story in human history,” according to the film’s website. “...nBalog began deploying revolutionary time-lapse cameras across the brutal Arctic to capture a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers.”
Balf said Maritime Gloucester is pleased to partner with Cape Ann Community Cinema for this showing of “Chasing Ice” and hopes to pack the house. Rob Newton of the community cinema also received a lot of requests to show the film.
“He thought it would be great opportunity to meet the interest out there and use it as a benefit for Maritime Gloucester,” said Balf.
The film is described as the story of one man’s mission “to gather undeniable evidence of climate change” as the film shows ancient mountains of ice “in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate.”
Balf said proceeds from the event will be used for future educational programs to raise awareness relative to climate change topics.
“In addition to all the maritime heritage and marine science programming, we are certainly interested in this critical issue,” he said.
Advance tickets for the 6 p.m. show on Jan. 27 can be purchased at www.CapeAnnCinema.com or at the door.
Tickets are $9.75, $8.25 for students and seniors, and $6.75 for cinema members.
