Making math fun in Rockport

School kids learning math on Saturday mornings? And having fun?

That's been the case this fall at Rockport Elementary School, where Bill Mueller and other school parents of pupils ages kindergarten through grade two have been participating in a family-based program called Math Circles.

"The whole idea is to show kids that math can be fun," said Rockport Elementary Principal Shawn Maguire, "especially in working with shapes, sizes and other aspects of math that kids might not always think of.

"We're already seeing a difference," Maguire added, noting that the school is looking to build on Math Circles' success and see how it can meld aspects of the program into the school's regular curriculum.

The equipment for the program is provided through a small Math Circle grant based out of California, Maguire said.

"It's been great, and the parents have been great in working with it."
