Local artists make the grade in two major shows

Watercolor paintings representing nearly 30 states and Canada will hang in the biennial show of the New England Watercolor Society that will be held here again at the North Shore Arts Association, opening Friday.

About 558 paintings were submitted for the national juried show of which 91 were chosen. North Shore Arts Association members selected for the show are Suzanne Brailey of Gloucester, Ralph Bush, Frank Federico, Marion Hall of Manchester, Gretchen Holesovsky, Margaret Khorey, Margaret Wilson Kipp, Antonia Marshall, Joan Murphy, Margaret Fox Rawls, Charles Shurcliff of Ipswich, William Duke of Newburyport, Steven Lush of North Andover, and Joyce Wood of Wakefield.

"The show provides snapshots of what artists are doing around the country in every style imaginable," said Becky Haletky, president of the New England Watercolor Society.

There will be a public reception as well as gallery talks during the show, which runs through Oct. 23 at the Pirates Lane gallery in East Gloucester.

The judge for the North American open show is John T. Salminen, a Minnesota artist who has won more than 185 awards in national and international exhibitions. A 2006 gold American Watercolor Society gold medalist, he is a well-known instructor and painter.

"We are very excited about the show," said Judy Metcalfe, an artist member of the North Shore Arts Association who chairs the show committee. "It means a lot to the association because autumn is a time when people are starting to come through and look at the leaves so we get a lot of traffic in October."

Several Cape Ann artists have also been invited to take part in the society's 125th anniversary show at the Plymouth Art Center from Oct. 20 to Nov. 14. The society, which has approximately 177 signature artist members, was founded in 1885 as the Boston Society of Watercolor Painters.

Cape Ann artists whose works are set to hang in the 125th anniversary show are Betty Lou Schlemm, T.M. Nicholas, Judy Metcalfe, Marilyn Swift, Charles Movalli, Nathalie Nordstrand, the late Martin Ahearn, the late Ruth Wynn, and a Stow Wengenroth on loan for this show.

There are 142 paintings in the anniversary show, including several that were borrowed paintings of deceased members.

The opening reception at the Plymouth show is Oct. 23 from 1 to 3 p.m. For more information, visit www.newenglandwatercolorsociety.org.
