Kids in the kitchen

Plum Cove pupils learn about nutrition, sanitation in cafeteria

Plum Cove Elementary School pupils recently took a field trip, but they didn’t go very far afield.`

Physical education teacher Erin Doane took kindergartners through fifth-graders on a trip to the school kitchen as part of their health classes’ nutrition unit.

The pupils learned about personal hygiene, sanitation, safety and the nutritional breakdown for the meal of the day.

Kindergartners through second-graders rotated through stations where they were supervised by kitchen staff in preparing yogurt, salad, fruit cups, apple sauce, carrots, baked beans and chicken patties.

Fourth- and fifth-graders helped serve lunch to kindergartners through second-graders.

This event was sponsored by the Gloucester Schools Food Service.
