Estes brings 'Peace and Harmony' to Rockport

Allen Estes, an award-winning singer-songwriter for more than 30 years, will perform in Rockport on Saturday evening, Sept. 11, during which he will play a recent song he wrote titled "Peace and Harmony."

That will be one of the many songs to be performed during the evening at the First Congregational Church of Rockport starting at 7:30 p.m.

"I'm going to do a mix of music including some of my Souls of the Sea stuff, as well as some of my newer songs," said Estes, who performed on Sunday as part of the line-up at the Celebrate Gloucester concert event.

Although Saturday is the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Estes said he had a much larger picture in mind when he wrote "Peace and Harmony."

"I was thinking of so many things when I wrote it. At the time the Gulf oil spill was in the news everyday as well as reports on the world at odds over religion around the globe. And there is this money-power hungry kind of thing that is starting to show some wear and tear on our fragile earth. That's what this song is about."

The song was well received when he performed it at Celebrate Gloucester. He also noted that his teenage son Dylan helped him as he worked on the bridge element of the song.

Estes also plans to perform a John Lennon song in tribute to the singer-songwriter who would have turned 70-years-old on Oct. 9.

For the most part, the show will be geared around his original songs.

"I'll be going on a musical journey as I put together my set list," said Estes in an interview this week. "I have my own golden oldies."

Estes has a long musical resume, which includes songs he wrote that have been recorded by a number of musicians including David Mallett, The Judds, Tom Wopat, Tammy Wynette and Shania Twain. He has opened shows for Bonnie Raitt, J. Geils, Reba McEntire, Waylon Jennings, Kenny Chesney, Tricia Yearwood, Livingston Taylor, Robert Palmer and many others.

He was a winner of the "Independent Music World Series New England" and was voted "Best Independent Act of New England." Allen is a lecturer in songwriting and performance at Berklee School of Music.

Performing with Estes are Sal Baglio on guitar and vocals and Matt Leavenworth on fiddle, guitar, and vocals. Baglio is front man for the Boston rock band The Stompers and has been described as "Boston Rock Royalty." Leavenworth is a master instrumentalist and another veteran of the Boston music scene.
