Coming home: Neighbors help baby turtles return to birthplace

While overseeding his lawn late last summer, Andrew Davidson of Tufts Lane accidentally dug up a nest of Eastern painted turtle hatchlings.

The accident led to a journey to New Hampshire and back to Gloucester this weekend for the turtles, and one of discovery for Davidson and his wife, Diane Lapine.

Last fall, in talking with a state licensed wildlife rehabilitator from Epping, N.H., Davidson and Lapine learned that baby turtles spend the winter in their nest.
