Melding music and movies

10-day cinema series matches live concerts with films

The band featured in a new documentary will perform at the exclusive screening of the film tonight, kicking off ten days of movies celebrating music.

The film and music series, “Fall Into The Rhythm,” is sponsored by Cape Ann Community Cinema and Gimme Live and includes live music at certain shows and a “Dinner & A Movie” event.

The series opens tonight at the cinema, 21 Main St., with a performance by The Cowsills and the showing of “Family Band: The Cowsills Story.”

Rob Newton, of the community cinema, has been putting on festivals for seven years now, first in Worcester and now in Gloucester.

“We are celebrating five years in business here on Cape Ann,” said Newton. “I take my movies very seriously and I take my music very seriously, too, and I thought this would be a good time to celebrate both at the same time.”

Tonight at 7:30 is the first of the live show features. The Cowsills are the 1960s musical phenomenon that influenced a generation of musicians and became the inspiration for the 1970s hit TV series, “The Partridge Family.” The Cowsills are most known for its No. 1 hits “The Rain, the Park and Other Things” (often referred to as “The Flower Girl Song,” which was featured in the Jim Carrey movie, “Dumb and Dumber”) “Indian Lake,” “We Can Fly” and the multimillion-selling title song from the musical “Hair.”

Other nights that feature live music are “Neil Young: Journeys” on Sept. 14 featuring a live tribute set by Forever Young, and an encore of June’s sold-out “Music From The Big House” on Sept. 15 with a live set by Canada’s ‘Queen Of The Blues’ Rita Chiarelli.”Hungarian Rhapsody: Queen Live In Budapest ‘86” will screen Sept. 20 with a live tribute set by the all-girl Queen tribute band Gunpowder Gelatine playing after the film — the cover band’s name is part of a lyric from Queen’s “Killer Queen.”

“Peace Notes: Ennio Morricone Live In Venice,” showing Sunday, Sept. 16, at 6:30 p.m., features the film composer conducting some of his greatest hits from films such as “The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly,” “The Mission” and “Cinema Paradiso” in an incredible open-air setting in Venice. A light Italian meal and dessert from a Main Street eatery will be served.
