Doing the songwriter shuffle, again

New round set for local musicians playing originals on local stage

A new musical happening, the Singer Songwriter Shuffle, has proved so popular that organizer Giuseppe’s Ristorante and Piano Bar is set to hold another session.

Each week for five weeks, seven musicians perform their own music around the grand piano for 20 minutes each, from 7 to 10 p.m.

“It’s been really great,” said restaurant owner Memory Layne. “And there are plenty of singer-songwriters here who want a chance to perform.”

The last session of the first five-week Shuffle is this Thursday. Scheduled to take the stage are Steve Caraway, Inge Berge, Satch Kerans, Jake Pardee, Randy Black, Brian O’Connor and Will Hunt.

The first Singer Songwriter Shuffle featured 21 Cape Ann and North Shore musicians. Its popularity with both patrons and the performers prompted Layne and husband Joe Thomas, the restaurant’s co-owner and main piano player, to host a new series of Shuffe.

Layne said some of the musicians from the first series will return, but there will be some new voices, too. The Shuffle will take a week’s hiatus and the new five-week series will begin May 2. The weekly schedule is posted on the website at

Giuseppe’s Ristorante and Piano Bar is at 2 Main St. in Gloucester in the Blackburn Building.
