Photography Atelier show comes to Rocky Neck

The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck at 6 Wonson St. in Gloucester is partnering with the Griffin Museum of Photography to present a selection of highly regarded photographs from the museum’s recent Photography Atelier exhibition.

The public is invited to meet the artists at a free opening reception to be held at the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck on Sunday, June 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. Regular gallery hours are Thursday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Now in its 18th year, the Photography Atelier is offered through the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester. The course is taught by Karen Davis with Meg Birnbaum assisting. In addition to guidance and support in the creation of a body of work, the class helps prepare artists to market, exhibit and present their work to industry professionals.

Karen Ristuben, president of the Rocky Neck Art Colony, is pleased to present an exhibition of this nature to Cape Ann.

“Bringing a show of this caliber to Rocky Neck is made possible in part, by the designation of Gloucester’s Cultural District at Rocky Neck by the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the dedication of a strong team of committed volunteers,” she said.

Instruction in the Atelier includes slide presentations and discussions that consider contemporary trends as well as the history of photography.

The participating artists include 15 accomplished and rising photographers including Gloucester’s Judy Robinson-Cox. The others are Bob Avakian of Edgartown, Betsy Constantine of Carlisle, Jorge Galvez and Amy Rindskopf of Winchester, Trelawney Goodell of Lexington, Vicki McKenna and Dick Simon of Newton, Jane Paradise of San Francisco and East Orleans, Linda Rogers of Westport, Gail Samuelson of Sherborn, Dianne Schaefer of Arlington, Alice Shafer of Acton, Ellen Slotnick of Newton Centre Christy Stadelmaier of Boston) and instructor Karen Davis of Hudson with assistant Meg Birnbaum of Somerville. The instructors and many of the students are well known in the world of photography.

The show runs through July 7.
