North Shore Arts hosts exhibitions, chamber music

The North Shore Arts Association has a bevy of exhibitions and events on tap this month.

The association will host a reception for Exhibition III this evening, July 11, from 6 to 8, to which the public is invited. This juried members’ exhibit includes oil, watercolor, and pastel paintings as well as a display of graphic works and sculpture.

The second exhibition of more than 100 works of art drew more than 100 guests, and the same is expected for this open event.

The next big event will be the association’s annual art auction on Aug. 17 with more than 100 juried works for sale.

Next Wednesday, July 17, features an opportunity for artists to draw or paint musicians in action with an open rehearsal of Music at Eden’s Edge, the North Shore’s resident chamber music ensemble. From 10 a.m. to noon, the chamber music organization presents a “paint-in,” which in fact is an open rehearsal as the ensemble prepares for its July concerts. Attendees can use the musicians as live models, interpret the music through painting, or just listen while surrounded by works of art. A $10 donation is suggested.

The ensemble’s July concert,“HighJinks and SummerScapes: A String Trio, a Bassoon Quartet and Assorted Escapades,” will take place July 27 at the North Shore Arts Association.

There are also two new solo shows now on display.

The works of award-winning artist John Caggiano are on exhibit in the Gordon Grant Gallery through July 29. Whether at home in the quaint and gritty harbors of rocky Cape Ann or on the road in the hills and valleys of Vermont, or farther afield, the landscape artist records his emotional response to his surroundings with brush, palette knife, and color in oil.

His professional background includes being a high school art teacher, a stage designer and painter, as well as the former president of Rockport Art Association. The other solo exhibition, in the Hallway Gallery, is of paintings by artist member Joann Phillips. Phillips has been featured in numerous exhibitions. Her extensive education includes art history courses at Harvard University, as well as classes at the Boston Center of Adult Education, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
