Poetry meets comedy

Hive hosts Cape Ann Improv for two-show slam jam

Now for something completely different, the Hive Community Center will host its first poetry slam jam comedy show, presented by Cape Ann Improv.

There will be two shows, each about an hour, on Saturday, March 16, at 8 p.m. and again at 9:30 p.m.

“Cape Ann Improv is teaming up with some beret-wearing, finger-snapping, bongo-slapping beatniks for a night of improv and poetry,” said Betsy Stockwell, a spokeswoman. “There will be all kind of poets, and all kind of surprises, and each show will be different.”

This is the fifth show presented by Cape Ann Improv since it became a nonprofit entity last fall.

David Brooks, founder of Cape Ann Art Haven that also runs the Hive, said he is thrilled to see the success of this group.

“The turnout for their shows has been amazing, and we’ve had full houses,” he said. “They do some exciting new stuff and the audiences are really responding to their improv. We love hosting them and we’re happy to support them in their efforts, and you can tell they really love what they do.”

The poetry slam jam is another example of the varied programming taking place through Cape Ann Art Haven. Brooks said the board of directors are still developing the programming at the Hive but are pleased with what has taken place so far.

“We’re looking for groups who are passionate about what they are doing, and Cape Ann Improv certainly is,” he added.

Tyrel Borowitz, an improv member, said the group is eager to put on this new show.

“It’s really exciting. We’re having a number of poets come to the show and they will read their poems and we will do improv based on their poems after each poet reads. In the second round of scenes, it will be an advancement of the characters or theme that was in the first round,” explained Borowitz. Then after three rounds, a fourth poem will be crafted.
