Satch Kerans, a rocker for decades, is releasing his latest CD at an event with a band of musicians tomorrow night.
Kerans, the former lead singer and songwriter for the Boston-based band The Catalinas, which had its heyday in the 1980s, made his home on Cape Ann more than a decade ago. A special education teacher for 17 years, most recently at Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School, music has always been part of Keran's life.
The title of the CD, "Pieces," in part reflects the diversity of life.
"This CD has a lot of depth," said Kerans. "It has garage rock, pop rock as well as beat poetry and kind of an Americana flair. The title describes a musical essence of sorts. It may refer to pieces of your life, or at time when you come out of something, perhaps a bad relationship, and you begin to move forward."
Kerans, 53, who has been playing guitar since he was a teenager, wrote all the songs on the CD.
The subjects are diverse. "American Cousin" reflects his take on post 9/11 America. "Cheap Carnival Lights," is about sneaking into the Topsfield Fair as a teenager.
The title track, "Pieces," is one of his favorites.
In the past, Kerans has opened shows for Roy Orbison, Little Steven Van Zandt, NRBQ, and The Pousette-Dart Band this past summer. "Pieces" is his third solo effort following up "Elliot Street" and "Riverboys."
"But we always enjoy playing at The Rhumb Line. It's been a home base on Cape Ann for me," said Kerans, who now lives in Rockport with his wife and 3-year-old son. "I have come to love the local music scene."
This CD was recorded in Gloucester at Bang A Song Studio off Main Street and co-produced by Tony Goddess.
Keran's band members on the CD are Phil Grayton on bass, Dan Genis on lead guitar, Coley Rybicki on drums and Mike Maciver on keyboards. Also on the CD are guest musicians Willie "Loco" Alexander with spoken words, Jeff Longwell on pedal steel guitar and Ian Kennedy on violin.
The CD release party will include appearances by special guests David "Doc" Vincent, Will Hunt, Bobby Cardoza, Stevie "Wah" Kerans and other Cape Ann and North Shore musical luminaries.
Kerans was a finalist in the River Rising Star Contest sponsored by WXRV 92.5 The River and has been featured on that station numerous times. He was also profiled by David Mead in American Songwriter Magazine.
