Playing into spring

Pianists, lecturer explore Stravinsky piece

There will be a concert-lecture event focusing on “Le Sacre du Printemps” or “The Rite of Spring,” by Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) on Monday, April 22, at 7 p.m. at the Shalin Liu Performance Center.

Pianists Leslie Amper and Randall Hodgkinson will perform the piece while the lecturer for the evening will be Dr. Elizabeth Seitz.

“The Rite of Spring” is the result of the composer’s collaboration with Sergei Diaghilev’s “Ballets Russes,” part of a series of choreographed episodes. First published in 1912 for four-hand piano, which is the form in which it will be heard in the concert here, the debut performance was in May 1913.

The ballet was choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky and the avant garde nature of the music and choreography, which included the subject of human sacrifice, resulted in a near riot. This work remains an audience favorite into the 21st century, and the original Nijinsky choreography has been reconstructed by the Joffrey Ballet.

The event is free to the public. No tickets are required. For information, visit www.rockportmusic.org. The Shalin Liu Performance Center is at 35 Main St. in Rockport.
