Creation celebration: Artist hosting open studio to mark milestone

Barbara Donnelly marks 20 years at Gloucester gallery

After years painting Gloucester in watercolor and oils, Barbara Donnelly is celebrating 20 years at her current studio located in the heart of the city’s waterfront.

To celebrate that milestone, the award-winning artist is holding an open studio at the Barbara Donnelly Art Gallery at 19 Harbor Loop in Gloucester tomorrow through Sunday, May 3 to 5, from noon to 6 p.m. each day.

This is an opportunity to meet the artist and see the largest collection of her paintings, both watercolor and oil, in the intimacy of her working harborside studio.

“A native of New England, I love its landscape and seacoast. However, anywhere in the world, water, boats, villages, cities and local people all have spirit that engages me,” she said.

In an artist statement, she said she strives “to saturate paintings with the color, light and life that embrace their true ‘essence.’”

Her subjects, as well as locales, are diverse, although one is bound to see many images of Gloucester Harbor with its variety of boats and schooners. Her gallery features seascapes, landscapes, architecture, still lifes and cityscapes bustling with people. An avid traveler, Donnelly has also set works in France, Ireland, Scotland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and China.

Donnelly, who has given painting lessons for 30 years, most often paints on location, where she absorbs the atmosphere as she transfers that energy through her brushwork onto the paper or canvas.

Donnelly is a full artist member of the North Shore and Rockport art associations, New England Watercolor Society, Copley Society (Copley Artist distinction), Academic Artists and American Artists Professional League.
