Triple play: Three theater groups host productions this weekend

A trifecta of theater performances are taking place on Cape Ann this weekend featuring dozens of local actors and promising a lot of laughs. Here is a look at the trio of works:

‘Dividing The Estate’

Theatre in the Pines presents the “Dividing The Estate,” a comedy of epic proportions, this weekend at Spiran Hall in Rockport.

Director Nan Webber said this work is about old resentments and sibling rivalries, which surface as the members of this hilariously dysfunctional family go head to head to see who might claim the biggest piece of the inheritance pie. Set in fictional Harrison, Texas, in 1987, it focuses on disgruntled siblings lorded over by an octogenarian matriarch, who find themselves facing real estate values that plunge and an unexpected tax bill, which impacts their financial health.

Cast members include Scott Hazzard, Kierstin Hazzard, Sarah Clark, Sue Barratt Souza, Rick Doucette, Eileen Fitzgerald, Mark Natti, Patti Natti, Ruth Exama, Alexa Exama, Patricia Richards and Carl Pulkkinen.

Performances are May 9, 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m. and May 12 at 3 p.m. at Spiran Hall, at the corner of Broadway and School Street in Rockport. Opening night proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Tickets are on sale at The Bookstore, 61 Main St. in Gloucester, and Toad Hall Bookstore, 47 Main St. in Rockport, and at the door.

‘Murder on Rocky Neck’

A witty opera and courtroom drama set in 1870s Gloucester will be unveiled tonight. The original work, titled “Murder on Rocky Neck,” was written by Henry Allen’s Young Playwrights, and includes a surprise ending. The show takes place at the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck at 6 Wonson St. in Gloucester, and is appropriate for all ages.

The show features an original score by Derek Dupuis, 16, who also composed the music for an earlier production titled “Song of The Sea.”
