---- — Music of champions will be performed Saturday night as the Cape Ann symphony presents what it calls “Heroic Music for Mother’s Day,” which includes works by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky.
The event closes the Cape Ann Symphony’s 61st season.
In addition to the Saturday, May 11, concert at 8 p.m., there is an open rehearsal tomorrow night at 7:30 at a reduced price. The concerts take place at the symphony’s new home at the Manchester Essex Regional High School auditorium.
The program features Tchaikovsky’s “Serenade for Strings” and Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 3, Eroica” which is the first in Beethoven’s series of three great heroic symphonies, said conductor Yoichi Udagawa.
“Tchaikovsky’s ‘Serenade for Strings’ is a gorgeous and beautiful masterpiece in four movements,” said Udagawa. “The movements are made up of an energetic first movement, sparkling waltz, expressive slow movement, and a joyful finale.”
He said Beethoven’s ‘Symphony No. 3’ is one of the composer’s most popular works.
“The ‘Eroica,’ which is Italian for ‘Heroic,’ was originally dedicated to Napoleon, but when the freedom-loving Beethoven heard that Napoleon had crowned himself emperor, he angrily slashed his pen through the dedication,” said Udagawa. “This is a sweeping and majestic work full of the strength, energy, passion, and even the humor Beethoven’s music is known for and the orchestra is looking forward to performing it.”
The “Heroic Music for Mother’s Day” concert is Saturday, May 11, at 8 p.m. at the Manchester Essex Regional High School auditorium at 36 Lincoln St. in Manchester, which is handicapped accessible. Tickets are $35 for adults, $30 for senior citizens, $20 for young adults (ages 19 to 24) and free for children 18 and younger.
The public is invited to Cape Ann Symphony’s open rehearsal for the “Heroic Music for Mother’s Day” concert on Friday, May 10, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The open rehearsal provides an opportunity to observe the collaborative process between the musicians and conductor as they prepare for a concert. Udagawa will take questions from the audience during a break. Admission is $10 for adults and free for children 18 and younger.
