Fun events tend to become traditions, and that's all the more rewarding when they have the added purpose of providing money that is used to help elders and disabled adults to live better and more independently.

While some SeniorCare services are funded in whole or in part by state or federal dollars, quite a few programs depend heavily upon donations to augment their good work. For example, SeniorCare's Independent Living Fund provides assistance for those who may be on fixed incomes and lack money for basic items.

SeniorCare Inc. celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, and over the years, several of its events have become well-loved Cape Ann traditions, such as the Lobsta Land Breakfast and the Meals on Wheels Valentine breakfast.

But, summer needs tradition, too, and what better way to be traditional on Cape Ann than with a sunset boat cruise?

For the third year, on Thursday, July 12, the Hurricane II will provide a scenic cruise to supporters of SeniorCare's programs for elders and the disabled.

Leo's Classic Hits will provide entertainment. The boat leaves Rose's Wharf precisely at 6:30 p.m. and returns at 9:30. There will be food, dancing, and a fun raffle.

Associated Home Care (http://www.associatedhomecare.com), a private pay home care agency based in Beverly, is the lead sponsor for this year's event. There will be a Koozie giveaway on board, and the sponsors of the Koozies are Essex Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center and ABC Home Healthcare Professionals.

Additional sponsors are BankGloucester, Adult Foster Care of the North Shore, TLC@Home, Caregiver Homes, Sidekim Foods, Harbor Light, Rockport National Bank, Bring Care Home, Sawyer Contract Interiors, Action Inc., North Shore Elder Services, Cape Ann Savings Bank, Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, Right at Home, and Elder Service Plan of the North Shore.

SeniorCare is a consumer centered organization that provides and coordinates non-medical services to elders and disabled adults. The services enhance their ability to live independently at home, or in a setting of their choice, while remaining part of their community. The agency serves Beverly, Essex, Gloucester, Hamilton, Ipswich, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Rockport, Topsfield and Wenham.

Recently, SeniorCare decided to move its main office to a more professional, and disabled accessible, location. Several spots were under consideration, including some in Beverly, but in the end, the decision was made to have its headquarters remain in its "home port" of Gloucester, which is good news, since SeniorCare employs nearly 100 employees who will continue to shop at local businesses and eat at local restaurants.
