Cape Ann Families, part of Wellspring House, will host free school vacation events.
"These activities offer an opportunity for families to have fun together without having to worry about financial constraints, and it's an important family component to have fun together," Stacy Randell, director of Cape Ann Families, said.
Events begin Monday with a children's acting workshop from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Tennis lessons will be offered 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the Stage Fort Park courts. In case of rain, the participants can meet at Cape Ann Families to watch the film "Happy Feet" with popcorn.
Curious Creatures will be at the event 10 a.m. Thursday.
All Cape Ann Families events are held at its site at 28 Emerson Ave., except for the tennis. To register or for details, call 978-281-7856 or e-mail Christina Kennedy at ckennedy@wellspringhouse.org.
Cinquain/art workshop and global games
As a tie to National Poetry Month in April, a workshop for children and adults will take place 10 a.m. to noon Thursday. The program will feature the writing of a cinquain poem and the creation of a fold-out book, which combines art and writing. The event takes place at Gloucester's Sawyer Free Library.
"This is a nice project for both children and adults," said Yetti Frenkel, the instructor, who received a Gloucester Cultural Council grant for the event.
Frenkel began her career as a fine artist, painting scenes of everyday life on the North Shore. She has painted murals for the children's departments of the Lynn, Swampscott, Saugus, Everett and Peabody public libraries. These murals depict the magic of a childhood influenced by books and reading.
Workshop participants will write a five-line poem about an animal and then illustrate a five-page, accordion-folded book. One format is to illustrate the animal poem on one side of the book, and the animal's habitat on the other. The workshop will take two hours to provide ample time to write a poem and use the library to gather reference material for the illustrations. Materials will be provided. The program is open to children ages 7 and older.
Frenkel has illustrated several books, including, "Andre the Famous Harbor Seal" for Down East Books. She is the author and illustrator of three other picture books: "Trudy and the Captain's Cat," "The Big, Blue Lump," and "Libby and the Cat." She received the KIND Honor Book for 2006 by the National Association for Humane and Environmental Education for "Libby and the Cat." "The Big, Blue Lump" was a Children's Choices selection for 2006.
On Wednesday, the children's library will present a program titled "Moving to the Beat" with Georgia Bills, geared toward kindergartners to fifth-graders, from 11 a.m. to noon. The program will feature songs and games from around the world.
To register in advance for these programs, call the children's room at the library at 978-281-9763.
