ALMON B. COOK SCHOLARSHIP FUND: The Almon B. Cook Scholarship Fund is accepting scholarship applications through May 4 from graduating Gloucester and Rockport high school seniors who plan to attend a two- or four-year college or trade school. The fund provides scholarships for any course or training aimed at developing or improving a natural gift, whether it is mental, physical or artistic. RAPE CRISIS CERTIFICATION: The North Shore Rape Crisis Center seeks the support of North Shore residents to help those affected by rape and sexual abuse. The center is looking for volunteers willing to become rape crisis counselors and staff its 24-hour hotline at 800-922-8772. After the training, volunteers will be certified to counsel victims of rape and sexual abuse. SENIORCARE VOLUNTEERS: Drivers are needed to take elders to local medical appointments or to deliver meals to those who are homebound. Drivers willing to go to out-of-town medical facilities are also needed. Mileage reimbursement is available. The SeniorCare RSVP America Reads Program pairs volunteers ages 55 and over with children in kindergarten to grade four who need help with reading. Volunteers are needed for Cape Ann communities. AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM: The Riverdale Youth Center afterschool program at the Gloucester Housing Authority's family development program offers a safe environment, nutritious snacks and recreational activities five days a week for children ages 5 to 14. The program also tutors children with reading and homework assignments. Donations of paper products, new books and videos, and new arts, crafts and paint supplies are needed. MONEY MANAGEMENT VOLUNTEERS: SeniorCare's Money Management program is looking for volunteers to assist low-income elderly with managing their checkbooks and paying bills. Volunteers are needed for four to six hours a month, and are asked to commit to the program for one year. Initial training is provided to orient volunteers on how to complete the necessary paperwork to safeguard clients, volunteers and the program. Ongoing training is available bimonthly. MAB COMMUNITY SERVICES: Donate your old car to MAB Community Services, formerly the Massachusetts Association for the Blind, which provides services and programs to the blind and vision-impaired community of Massachusetts. CELL PHONES FOR SOLDIERS: Cell Phones for Soldiers is a nonprofit organization that has raised more than $250,000 and has sent more than 9,000 prepaid calling cards to troops. The Cape Ann Moose Lodge 1471 and Women of the Moose 896 will collect cell phones Saturdays from 1 to 3 p.m., and Causeway Liquors on Essex Avenue will accept cell phones at any time. The program accepts any make or model cell phone with the attached battery only. Cell phones are recycled for cash to purchase calling cards. MENTORS NEEDED: The Wellspring House Foundations Program seeks women for its Graduate Mentoring Program. PAWSITIVE CONNECTIONS PROGRAM: SeniorCare Inc.'s Pawsitive Connections Program provides information and referral services, as well as assistance to elders to help them continue to live independently while being able to enjoy the company of their pets. The program, which receives no state funding, is sometimes able to contribute limited funds for temporary care, rabies vaccinations or food for very low-income elderly pet-owners. Pawsitive Connections participates in the "Cash for Critters" program and needs empty recyclable printer cartridges. CONSERVATION COMMISSION: The Gloucester Conservation Commission seeks environmentally conscious volunteers. The purpose of the Conservation Commission is to protect environmental resources and the adjoining uplands from adverse impact by enforcing the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act and the city Wetlands Ordinance. The commission also advises other city boards on environmental matters and encourages public outreach on conservation issues. It meets the first and third Wednesday of the month. CAPE ANN ANIMAL AID VOLUNTEERS: Cape Ann Animal Aid, 260 Main St., a no-kill, nonprofit organization dedicated to finding appropriate placement for adoptable animals, needs volunteers to help with paperwork, making phone calls or working with animals. People who can volunteer on a regular basis, several times a year or at special events are welcome. The shelter also seeks donations of trash bags (30-plus gallon size), paper towels, laundry detergent, bleach, dish detergent, SOS pads, chew toys for dogs, collars and leashes, Revolution for cats and dogs (all sizes), Frontline for cats and dogs (all sizes), printing paper, ink cartridges for a Samsung ML 1710 laser printer and a Canon 6012F copier. FUND TO PREVENT HOMELESSNESS: The nonprofit organization based in Manchester provides one-time assistance to families in Beverly, Essex, Gloucester, Hamilton, Manchester, Rockport and Wenham who do not qualify for any state funding. The fund, which gives 100 percent of contributions to families in need, defines families as a minimum of at least one parent and one child in the home. The board uses a volunteer professional intake coordinator to evaluate and assess the needs of families requesting assistance. Most families are referred by social service organizations or clergy. THRIFT SHOP: The Cape Ann Thrift Shop at Trinity Congregational Church, 70 Middle St., is open Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon. The dollar rack offers daily bargain items in assorted sizes. There is also a display of household items, children's clothing, bric-a-brac, and toys.

VISITOR CENTER: The Gloucester Visitor Center at Stage Fort Park greets 35,000 to 40,000 visitors each year. The center needs volunteers who are knowledgeable about Gloucester's history, enjoy meeting people from all over the world, are able to give directions and are capable of working in a hectic environment. Wellspring House is a Gloucester organization that has developed programs that help people who want to move out of poverty. By providing shelter for homeless families, affordable housing, education and community support programs, the organization helps strengthen the traditions of social justice and mutual responsibilities. Much of Wellspring House's programs are supported by volunteers from surrounding communities. Wellspring House is always interested in recruiting volunteer help for its many different programs. ERIN K. ERNEST SCHOLARSHIP: The family and friends of Erin K. Ernest have established a scholarship in her memory for a Gloucester High School student pursuing higher education. Erin graduated from Gloucester High School in 1998, and died Sept. 8, 2004, after a brief illness. Erin had many interests, but one of her passions was animals. Scholarship preference will be given to a student pursuing a career in the field of veterinary medicine or veterinary technician, although all students planning to further their education should apply. Crafters receive 70 percent of the items' price; the remainder pays for shop expenses and charitable donations, including an annual Gloucester High School scholarship. The shop is staffed by volunteers and is in need of assistance. Many crafters are elderly or have health problems that prevent them from assisting at the shop. PATHWAYS VOLUNTEERS: Pathways for Children needs volunteers to help out, either for one time only or on a weekly basis, working with support staff in the classroom, sharing a special interest or skill or assisting with homework. Pathways has opportunities working with all age levels, beginning with infants and toddlers in the Young Families Initiative program, Head Start preschool programs, and School-Age Care, which provides after-school programs for children up to age 12. MENTORS NEEDED: Wellspring House's One Family Scholarship Program is looking for volunteer mentors to guide and support low-income female scholars in education, career development and leadership potential. Women of all ages and life experiences who are self-aware, supportive, reflective, organized, motivational, positive are invited. Mentors must commit to a one-year relationship. Training and support are provided. The program matches scholars with professional women in or close to their fields of study to provide educational and career guidance, networking, help obtaining resources and moral support. Mentors help scholars balance their roles as single parents, students, community leaders and workers. Scholars and mentors meet monthly and stay in contact through phone and e-mail. The program provides support to single mothers who have been homeless or are at risk of being homeless. It offers a safe, comfortable base from which scholars gradually learn to shift their efforts from a struggle for survival to improving their own lives, those of other families in need and their communities. PAT ROY SCHOLARSHIP: The board of directors of the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce has established a scholarship in honor of past president Pat Roy, the first woman leader in the organization's history. The scholarship will be awarded each year to a young woman pursuing business courses at the college level. The chamber will provide an annual endowment of $500 and welcomes additional contributions from those wishing to honor Roy's accomplishments as a key member of the Woodman family business and in strengthening the business and civic climate of the region.
