Around Cape Ann
Don Gorvett, an artist, printmaker, and longtime Cape Ann resident, has invested in Gloucester's downtown.
He is preparing for the grand opening of Gravure Gallery, his gallery and studio at 51 Main St.
The gallery will feature his large scale, multi-color reduction woodblock prints. Work by a few other accomplished area artists will be on display, including woodcuts and etchings by Sidney Hurwitz, Sean Hurley, and Alex DeConstant, and photos by Conrad Marvin. He will host a public reception this Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m.
Gorvett, a graduate of the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and a resident of Ogunquit, Maine, is a former board member of Boston Printmakers. His works may be found in the collections of the Boston Athenaeum, the Portland Museum of Art, the Ogunquit Museum of American Art, the Cape Ann Museum, the Duxbury Art Complex, the Currier Museum of Art, and numerous corporate and private collections.
Since 2007, Gorvett has operated Piscataqua Fine Arts printmaking studio in Portsmouth, N.H. He recently gave a talk on woodcuts at the Cape Ann Museum, where the woodblocks for his 3-by-8-foot print "Harbor Fantasy" are on display in the Fisheries Room. Latitude hosting Fiesta benefit
Visiting favorite Inge Berge, local musicians Dan and Brian King, Ann Marie Shimanoski, Leo Sharimataro, Joe & Renee, and more will join in a benefit Gloucester All-Star celebration of Fiesta tomorrow at Latitude 43 on Rogers Street.
The event, which has a $10 cover charge, is a fund-raiser, with part of the proceeds being donated to Wylinn's Wish for a Cure, an organization working to find a cure for juvenile diabetes. The project is a local foundation, organized by Gloucester's Theresa Palmisano in honor of her 5-year old granddaughter who was diagnosed with the disease one year ago.
There will be raffle items and door prizes donated by local businesses. Doors open at 9 p.m.
Saturday, Latitude 43 will host a performance by SAFETY, featuring King, Tony Goddess, Kascia Murray, Brian King, Ann Marie, Guy Fiero and Dennis Monagle, with Inge Berge as a special guest.
The show will feature cover songs and is a live special Fiesta event that will be filmed. Doors again open at 9, with a $10 cover.
Local music
Lori Diamond and Fred Abatelli will perform Sunday morning at the Seaward Inn in Rockport from 9 a.m. until noon. Diamond's newest CD "Mystery" was released in February. Abatelli will join her on guitar, bass and vocals. Locally, she is a founding member of Too Many Drivers, Biggs Band and the DB Wilfred Band. For information, visit www.seawardinn.com. Local firefighter Mike "Chipper" Chipperini's band Hoodoo Revelator will be hosting a Fiesta Bash on Saturday at Elliott's at the Blackburn, beginning at 9 p.m. The band plays original numbers as well as songs by the J. Geils Band, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, and more.
Alek Razdan and A-Train will perform at Halibut Point State Park on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. The 16-year-old sax and clarinet phenom and his quartet play a wide-ranging selection of jazz, swing and blues, perfect for all ages. "Jazz at The Studio" at The Studio restaurant on Rocky Neck Avenue this Sunday features Jeff Galindo, a Berklee College professor and world-class trombone player. Also playing will be Jack Senier on piano, Mark Carlsen on bass, Al Boudreau on drums and vocals and Barbara Boudreau on vocals. Music starts at 5 p.m.

Lannon will feature Celtic musicians and an evening of traditional music on board Sunday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The venture features Michael O'Leary and friends: singers Tony Hilliard and Janet Young, fiddlers Jen Strom and Dave Hallowell, harper and singer Kate Chadbourne, string players Bob Strom, Steve Levy & Lin Swicker, and piper/whistle player/singer David de la Barre. Tonight at the Rhumb Line will feature Dave Sag's Blues Party with Brad Foucher, on guitar and John Loud on drums.
Local bluesman Mike O'Connell will be presenting his group, including Jay Aptt on guitars, Cliff Spencer on keyboards, Borderland Chrissy on bass, with Joey Scrima on drums at The Dog Bar tomorrow night at 9. Saturday, the Dog Bar will host Boston Horn saxophonist Henley Douglas Jr. and his Soul Force 5 at 9 p.m.
Sunday, Inge Berge and Bradley Royds will co-host DogBar Sundays for a special evening to entertain Feista revelers.
New Orleans singer Henri Smith will celebrate Fiesta spirit at Elliot's at the Blackburn tomorrow night starting at 8:30.
Australian music at sea
The schooner Thomas E. Lannon will welcome aboard Australian songster Danny Spooner for his only public concert on Cape Ann next Wednesday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Visitors are invited to haul on the halyards with a genuine "good on ya" from a real working chanteyman. Also aboard for this musical sail will be Jay and Laurie Keefe, Daisy Nell & Capt. Stan and other local musicians.

Outdoor RAA classes
The Rockport Art Association holds weekly outdoor classses from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
On Wednesdays is an oil and acrylic class with Susan Guest-MacPhail. This class is for the novice painter, as well as those who wish to develop their expertise.
On Thursdays is a watercolor class with Carole Loiacono. The aim of this class is to capture the spirit of the outdoors by creating a painting with good composition, strong values and exciting color.

Free talk/ historic houses
Photographer Geoffrey Gross will present a talk on how to capture the beauty of historic houses Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Sawyer Free Library.
Gross's photography in the 2008 book Great Houses of New England features four house museums owned by Historic New England including Beauport, the Sleeper-McCann House, which also appears on its cover.

Magical pottery wheel
The program "Pied Potter Hamelin's Magical Pottery Wheel" will be presented tomorrow from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Manchester Community Center.
This unique pottery performance includes stories about old Massachusetts potters and will show how many items, including teapots and dragons are made on the wheel. This is a free event for all ages. It includes a pinch pottery workshop.
Maritime mansion tour
Maritime Mansions at Twilight, a new series of special tours that highlight significant homes that have a maritime theme in North of Boston communities, will feature Gloucester's Sargent House tonight at 7 with "Reversal of Fortune: Judith Sargent & the Fight for Women's Rights."
Visitors can hear how a loveless marriage, enormous debts, and a great love affair led to the fight for female independence, and view works by Fitz Henry Lane and John Singer Sargent. Gallery Talk at Cape Ann Museum
The Cape Ann Museum will host a gallery talk with Tom Halsted, grandson of Charles Hopkinson on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The talk is held in conjunction with the exhibition "View from the Terrace: The Paintings of Charles Hopkinson."
Halsted, Charles Hopkinson's eldest grandson, is a writer who moved to Gloucester after a career in national security policy in Washington.
Best known as the "dean" of American portrait painters, Charles S. Hopkinson (1869-1962) had a long and productive career that over the course of 60 years took him into the homes of some of this country's most esteemed educators, politicians and businessmen.

Dharma Day
The next monthly Dharma Day will be held Saturday from 1 to 8:30 p.m. at the Vajramudra Center, 154 Granite St., Rockport.
The event is open to all by donation.
The day begins at 1 p.m. with Tibetan Heart Yoga with Dr. Pattie O'Brien, and includes audio teachings by Lama Marut, guided meditation, group discussion and a pot-luck dinner, ending with Dharma Flick's "God and Buddha: A Dialogue," which depicts the conversation between Deepak Chopra and Robert Thurman about the connections and differences between two of India's most important philosophical beliefs: Vedanta and Buddhism. It was filmed in 1999 at New York City's Tibet House.
Visitors are welcome to attend any session of interest throughout the day and the pot-luck dinner in the evening. Bring a dish for the pot-luck dinner; tea will be provided.

Fairy Festival
Underwood Photography, 73 Martin St., Essex, is teaming up with Cape Ann Habitat for Humanity to hold the sixth annual Fairy Festival this Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the studio.
The event features free activities for children and parents, including fairy house building, a fairy tea party, fairy arts and crafts, and story-telling by Jape Payette.
For those interested, photographs will be taken of the fairies and elves with a portion of the proceeds donated to Cape Ann Habitat for Humanity. If children do not have their own costume, several costumes may be borrowed.
Final Rockport Music shows
The final two shows of Rockport Music take place at Rockport High School auditorium next week.
On Wednesday, Esperanza Spalding, the 24-year-old jazz vocalist and bass player who performed at the White House, will make her debut here. She recently performed for President Barack Obama and the first lady.
On July 2, Alison Brown, a Grammy Award-winning banjoist and the co-founder of Compass Records, will perform with her quartet. She's in the Boston area to perform tracks off of her new album, "The Company You Keep." Brown is a Harvard alum, received her MBA from UCLA and worked as an investment banker before joining Alison Krauss and Union Station for a three-year stint in 1989. She has received three Grammy nominations for her solo recordings, a Grammy Award in 2001 for Best Country Instrumental Performance, and the International Bluegrass Music Association's award for Banjo Player of the Year.

Nights on the Neck
This month's Nights on the Neck at the Rocky Neck Art Colony is set for Thursday, July 2, from 5 to 9 p.m. and spotlights:
Three Sheets to the Wind, spawned by the Schooner Adventure organization. This group of local musicians and Adventure crew members are preserving the history of maritime work songs, or chanteys.
Corwin Ericson, who lives in western Massachusetts where he works as a writer, editor, and college instructor. He will read from his novel-in-progress, "Swell," from which an excerpt was recently published in "X: The Erotic Anthology," edited by Susie Bright (Chronicle, 2008).
Rick Drost, who began singing with a Kingston Trio-style group in high school, continued in a small folk group in college, then a glee club and an opera chorus.
Tom Hauck and his novel, "Pistonhead," a story about the life of a rock musician who doesn't reach stardom.
Ev Harlow & Friends, who are known for his wacky songs and goofball on-stage banter.
