Budding flautists

ESSEX — They hold their long, shining instruments aloft, struggle to find the proper fingering, and then blow.

Fourth-graders at Essex Elementary School are learning to play the flute.

The lessons are taught by music teacher Rich Carpenter.

The schoolchildren start out playing the recorder in third grade and can then move on to the more challenging flute in the fourth grade, if they’re interested.

“It’s one of the most difficult beginning instruments,” says Carpenter of the flute.
