Celebrating baptism and babies

Vintage baby items to be displayed

The women of Holy Family Parish are hosting an evening of sharing as well as collecting baby goods for its sister parish in the Dominican Republic.

The gathering Tuesday, Feb. 5, in Monsignor Sullivan Hall (lower church) takes place at 7 p.m. for those interested from the parish or the community.

In addition to sharing personal stories about baptism, in the spirit of sharing, the organizers are accepting “baby shower” gifts that will go to new mothers in the parish mission in the village of Cevicos in the Dominican Republic. Unwrapped light-weight clothing for a newborn to size 2 or other baby items will be welcomed gifts.

Attendees are encouraged to share the memories of baptism by bringing in vintage christening apparel along with vintage infant clothing and other memorabilia to be displayed for the enjoyment of all. The organizers are also asking that participants bring in baptism photographs or photographs of themselves as babies or young children.

As an added bonus, the organizers will present refreshments of traditional Sicilian cassata cake, champagne punch, coffee and tea.

The Cevicos mission was started in 2001 by Deacon William Kane at St. Joachim’s Parish in Rockport. When the Cape Ann parishes reorganized to form Holy Family Parish, the connections to the village in the Dominican Republic remained intact. Four times a year Deacon Kane leads adult and youth groups from Holy Family Parish to visit the “twin parish” to assess its needs and work on projects.

One facet of the work is promoting healthy child care. With that in mind, the women of Holy Family Parish will send the “shower” gifts to the new mothers of Cevicos in support of the efforts of Deacon Kane and his workers, according to the organizers.
