'Youth' in final weekend at Gloucester Stage

Gloucester Stage Company’s third summer production — the critically acclaimed “This is Our Youth” — is winding into its final weekend, with the piece by award-winning playwright and screenwriter Kenneth Lonergan due to close on Sunday.

And that will set the stage next week for a six-show engagement of “Dueling Divas (and a Dandy)” cabaret.

”This Is Our Youth,” which features the return of Jimi Stanton and Amanda Collins from 2012’s critically acclaimed “9 Circles,” and the Gloucester Stage debut of Elliot Norton award winner Alex Pollock, is described as humorous, compassionate and powerful in creating a “living snapshot of the moment between adolescence and adulthood” when young people first go out into the world on their own.”

The plot summary states that the play “follows 48 turbulent hours in the lives of three very lost young souls in the big city in 1982 at the dawn of the Reagan Era.”

The piece is directed by Lewis D. Wheeler, whom Gloucester Stage followers will remember as the priest in the 2009 production of “Doubt: A Parable” starring Nancy E. Carroll as the Mother Superior.

Lonergan’s screen writing includes the 1999 comedy “Analyze This,” which he followed in 2000 by directing the film “You Can Count on Me,” which was nominated for an Academy Award.

The “Dueling Divas (and a Dandy!)” cabaret will run for one week only, opening next Wednesday, Aug. 28.

The show features Stoneham’s Kathy St. George and Boston singer-actress Kerry Dowling who will perform songs from the Great American Songbook. They will be joined by Daniel Robert Sullivan, who appeared with the national tour of “Jersey Boys” and will “preside” over the two divas who “affectionately battle” for center stage.

The music to be performed includes “There’s Nothing Like A Dame,” “What You Don’t Know About Women” and a medley of Broadway love ballads among many other songs. There are six shows, with a Saturday matinee and the final performance on Sept. 1.
