Gloucester man's furniture touring New Hampshire

A Gloucester resident is this week's featured artist in exhibition of pieces by master furniture makers.

John Cameron, who works out of studio on Mount Pleasant Avenue in East Gloucester, is a member of the the New Hampshire Furniture Masters, a group of New England artisans celebrating its 15th anniversary with a series of shows, ending with a show and Sept. 12th auction at the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, N.H.

Cameron's, and the works of the other masters whose pieces will be at the live auction, are now on view through Sept. 9 at the New Hampshire Historical Society's library at 30 Park Street in Concord, N.H.

"Furniture should be quietly pleasing, humming softly rather than loudly proclaiming its presence ... fitting into a room for years to come," said Cameron on his website.

Cameron began his woodworking career in 1984 as a boat builder's apprentice, drawn to work that engaged his mind and hands. The artist was also drawn to boat building, he notes, because "almost nothing is straight or square." The next phase of Cameron's education took place at the College of the Redwoods in Fort Bragg, Calif., where he studied with James Krenov. Cameron attributes much of his creative inspiration to his work with Krenov, as well as woodworkers Edward Barnsley and Wharton Esherick.

Today Cameron designs and builds custom furniture out of his one-person shop in East Gloucester. Among his most recent creations is "Saturn," Cameron's submission for the N.H. Furniture Masters' 2010 auction. The piece is comprised of walnut, European walnut, ash, and butternut.

An accomplished engraver, Cameron frequently adorns the hardware of his pieces with handcarved ornamentation.
