The Gloucester woman airlifted by paramedics from a wrecked car near Exit 14 on Route 128 Thursday remained hospitalized Friday night, but was listed in good condition at Tufts Medical Center in Boston.
The woman, identified Friday morning as Amiee Shea, 27, with a last known address of 77 Friend St., crashed her sedan into a guardrail just before Exit 14 on the northbound lane of Route 128 Thursday at 12:40 p.m.
She sustained serious, but “not life-threatening” injuries, according to Massachusetts State Police Trooper Todd Nolan.
Julie Jette, spokeswoman for the Tufts Medical Center said late Friday that Shea was recovering well.
“She’s in good condition,” she said.
It took firefighters two hours to cut Shea out of her car before Dartmouth-Hitchcock Air Ambulance flew her to Tufts Medical Center after landing in the northbound lanes of the highway Thursday afternoon. State Police are still investigating the crash, and didn’t have any further information on its cause as of Friday. State Police said they will pursue charges against Shea of driving under the influence of drugs and driving with a suspended license.
Police and Gloucester firefighters responded to the crash, shutting down traffic on the northbound lane for hours on Thursday.
The road conditions were clear that day, but no one saw the accident happen, said Gloucester Police Sergeant James Marshall.
The force of the crash knocked Shea into the passenger’s seat and wrapped parts of the car around her legs.
Gloucester Fire Chief Eric Smith conceded at the scene that it was rare for someone to survive such a crash.
