Three of Cape Ann’s high-profile musical performers will be hitting the stage in concert this weekend at venues in Essex, Rockport and, of course, Gloucester.
Allen Estes, Friends and Guests, will perform at the One World Coffeehouse in Essex at the First Universalist Church on Saturday at 8 p.m.
Estes, a singer-songwriter, just opened for Orleans at the North Shore Music Theater and received a standing ovation as the opening act. He said he looks forward to the coffeehouse atmosphere.”They are a sharp listening audience. They are very intuitive and aware at these coffeehouses,” said Estes who has hosted a cable television show called the Local Music Seen for the past year and a half.
”In that period of time we’ve done around 40 shows of such a variety of music,” said Estes who opens every show with one of his songs. “This show has inspired me to write even more.”
Matt Leavenworth will accompany Estes on guitar and fiddle. There is a $15 suggested donation at the door. The church is at 59 Main St. in Essex. For reservations, call 978-768-3690.
Crimes of the Heart
The Pulitzer Prize winning “Crimes of the Heart” continues at Gloucester Stage Company with shows through Sept. 16.
This is the final play of the 2012 summer season with Director Carmel O’Reilly directing Beth Henley’s award-winning work and leading a cast that features McCaela Donovan, Liz Hayes, Will Keary, Lenni Kmiec, Melody Madarasz and Liam McNeill — all making their Gloucester Stage debut in a witty, warmhearted tale of three passionate southern sisters who confront life head on.
The show also won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, and has appeared on Broadway, and later in a film version.

Old Sloop Coffeehouse presents Chelsea Berry on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church of Rockport at 12 School St., with Anna Dagmar opening.
Born and raised in Alaska, Berry made her way through Montana, Nashville, and Chicago before settling on Cape Ann three years ago. Her music is played regularly on Sirius XM’s The Loft radio, and she has been played on Boston’s 92.5 The River and many other stations in the Northeast.
Dagmar, born in England and raised in Chelmsford, is now based in New York City. She is described as a singer, songwriter, pianist, and arranger extraordinaire. Anna was chosen as a Kerrville (Texas) New Folk Festival finalist and was a gold prize winner of the Mid-Atlantic songwriting contest.
Tickets can be purchased in advance for $10 from the website at oldsloopcoffeehouse.org, at Gloucester Music, and at Toad Hall Bookstore in Rockport. The suggested donation at the door is $12 for adults, $7 for those 65 and older, $5 for those younger than 18, and $24 for a family.

Finally, Willie Alexander and Preacher Jack return to the Dog Bar Saturday at 9 p.m. to celebrate the 31st Anniversary of the Noise magazine.
Publisher T Max hosts and opens the entertainment with tunes from his recently released On British TV. The show is free. Alexander, of Gloucester, became a member of the Velvet Underground in 1971, and later formed the Boom Boom Band, touring Europe with both acts. He has 28 releases to his name.
Films celebrating music
The Cape Ann Community Cinema and promotional partner gimmelive.com will present 10 days of movies celebrating music, starting next Tuesday and running through Sept. 20.
The series “Fall Into The Rhythm” includes live music at select shows and a “dinner and movie” event. The main feature of the festival takes place on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 7:30 p.m. when The Cowsills perform and host a question session after an exclusive screening of the new documentary “Family Band: The Cowsills Story.”
The other nights that feature live music are “Neil Young: Journeys” on Sept. 14 featuring a live tribute set by Forever Young, an encore of June’s sold-out “Music From The Big House” on Sept. 15 with a live set by Canada’s “Queen Of The Blues” Rita Chiarelli and “Hungarian Rhapsody: Queen Live In Budapest ‘86” on Sept. 20 with a live tribute set by the all-female group Gunpowder Gelatine.

“Breaking Bread at the Barn,” a gathering at the home-studio of Jackie Ganim DeFalco’s sea glass jewelry studio, takes place Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Gloucester artist Paul Ciaramitaro will give a free drawing demonstration at North Shore Arts Association on Saturday, 8 at 2 p.m.
This event will highlight his weekly basic drawing class to be held at the arts association on Mondays in September from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. The class will cover composition, perspective, theory and good drawing design using simple skeletons and geometric forms.
On Sunday, the association will host a free demonstration in oil and acrylic by artist member and workshop instructor Peter Spataro at 2 p.m.

National Theatre Live
National Theatre Live, featuring the best of British theater broadcast live to cinemas around the world, returns to Rockport with the HD broadcasts held at the Shalin Liu Performance Center.
Tonight features Mark Haddon’s celebrated, multi-award-winning novel “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” shown at 7 p.m.

Cantemus auditions
Cantemus Chamber Chorus, under Music Director Jane Ring Frank, will launch its 30th-anniversary year with auditions and an open rehearsal next Tuesday at the Miles River Middle School n Hamilton.
Singers who already know they would like to try out should telephone 888-246-7871 to make an appointment to audition that night, prior to the rehearsal. Singers who are not yet familiar with the group may join the rehearsal at 7:30 p.m., to decide if they want to audition the following week, on Sept. 18.

Fall youth acting workshops
Gloucester Stage Youth Acting Workshops is accepting students 6-19 for the fall session, which begins on Sept. 21.
This session includes guest instructors such as New York City Opera and Broadway performer George Dvorsky, magician Evan Northrup and properties masters Joe Stallone and Jamie Wilkinson.
Students will be introduced to elements of magical storytelling as well as the theatrical secrets of building props for the stage.
The six-week session meets Fridays and Saturdays for four hours per week. Thanks to sponsorship in part from The Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Foundation and the Bruce J. Anderson Foundation, the workshops are able to expand the hours of instruction, lower tuition and offer limited scholarships for the fall.
Award-winning actress and Gloucester native Heidi Dallin designs the workshops to provide young people an outlet to nurture their creative potential through developing self-confidence, communication and teamwork skills to use in their daily life as well as professional theater.
