Rockport Rotary continues aid effort for Haiti

ROCKPORT — To date, members of the Rotary Club of Rockport have donated enough money to ship five ShelterBoxes to Haiti.

Members "passed the hat" on Thursday, Jan. 21, and collected over $800 that day alone.

They were challenged by club President Janelle Favaloro to continue collecting from friends, neighbors, family, and bosses over the next week. This week's meeting brought in another $2,600 in donations.

The club had initially agreed to sponsor one ShelterBox using money from the club's general fund within days of the earthquake. However, club members elected to continue the project by donating out of pocket funds as well as those collected from friends and businesses.

A ShelterBox contains enough supplies for 10 people and includes all new equipment such as a tent, shovels, blankets, a basic tool kit, ground sheets, cooking supplies, utensils, and water purification. ShelterBoxes are packed in a light weight, re-usable container that is also water proof. It was featured on CNN last week, and the video is still available on the CNN Web site.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to this project can contact any Rotarian, or call Favaloro at 978-283-4815 for more information.

Soup and Study

The community is invited to participate in a Lenten program series that studies the book "The Prodigal God" by best-selling author Dr. Timothy Keller.

Each of the six sessions begins with a soup supper served at the Rockport United Methodist Church at 5 p.m.

The study, led by Pastor Jenny Styers, begins at 5:45 p.m. and presents a new way to look at the well-known parable. Each session ends with worship from 7 to 7:30 p.m. The public is welcome to attend any one, two, or all of the three components.

Books will be available on Monday. The program begins on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17 and continues each Wednesday through March 24. To reserve a book and let the church know if you plan to attend the program series, call 978-546-2093.

Quick hits

For about a week after the special election to fill the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by the late Sen. Edward Kennedy, it seemed Rockport officials might have known something the rest of the world wouldn't learn for another nine months.

The "What's New" section of the official town Web site featured a link to Rockport's vote totals, which showed the victory for Attorney General Martha Coakley over Wrentham state Sen. Scott Brown — who shocked the nation by beating Coakley to assume control of a senate seat held for decades by the Democrats.

The only problem with the link was, instead of leading people to the election results of 1/19/2010, the link stated "10/19/2010" election results.

People in the news

Rockport publisher Protean Press recently announced publication of Anne Cabot Wyman's "Kipling's Cat: A Memoir of My Father."

Protean Press an imprint of Open Book Systems, Inc., has released four books over the past two years. A small, woman-owned company, Open Book Systems Inc. has been in business in Rockport since 1982, and in 2009, its CEO¬ Laura Fillmore Evans, re-established the Protean Press imprint with the publication of Gloucester's author /historian, Joseph E. Garland's "Unknown Soldiers: Reliving World War II in Europe."

Protean's new release is also rich in history. In this case the history of a brilliant, eccentric father, as seen through the eyes of his daughter.

Wyman is now 80 years old, and as such, brings a lifetime's perspective to the memoir. With narrative skills honed as a former travel writer and, for 30 years, editor of a major Boston newspaper, the Cambridge-based author introduces the reader to the many sides of her complex father, Jeffries Wyman — scion of Harvard, scientist, roving artist, and absentee parent.
