Gloucester Police/Fire: City man faces domestic abuse charge

Gloucester police/fire

Several calls about an episode of domestic violence at a Patriots Circle home led police to arrest a 37-year-old Thurston Point Road resident and charge him with domestic assault and battery.

Christopher J. Souza initially told police that his girlfriend had punched him in the face and smashed his iPhone after reading a text message on the phone. But police found that “the evidence on scene appeared to back up (the girlfriend’s) explanation of what happened.”

She told officers that she had thrown Souza’s cell phone after reading a text message, then he “dragged” her off the bed, “threw” her to the floor, and held her down. Police said bruising and marks on her body backed up that description of events.

She told police Souza then said that he would smash a plate on his own face because his arrest record would “land him in jail.” He allegedly asked the woman to hang up the phone multiple times after she called police.

Police found a smashed plate on the kitchen floor and found bits of Souza’s smashed iPhone all over the outside steps where he was sitting when police arrived.

Police said it “appeared” Souza had smashed the phone on the ground outside. He was given the option to press charges for the damaged phone as he was arrested, but chose not to.

After receiving a report of a group drinking and smoking marijuana in the Granite Street area Monday afternoon, police arrested a 24-year-old homeless man and charged him with disorderly conduct.

Christopher Winkle, police said, “became uncooperative” when officers stopped him and three others on Gould Court, regarding the report. Winkle was allegedly “swearing at the officers,” and refused to stop swearing when officers asked him to.

Police arrested him on the disorderly conduct charge and Winkle allegedly continued to swear and call police names on the way to the station.
