Essex Police/Fire: Boaters escape injury in Essex River

Essex police/fire

ESSEX — Some Essex River boaters escaped serious injury Sunday morning after their small vessel capsized.

Police said the incident occurred at around 11:15 a.m., and that passersby tried to help the boaters who had fallen into the water.

A harbormaster’s boat happened to be cruising the river and helped bail out the boat and treat the boaters, police said. One boater refused medical treatment despite what police said was a mild case of exposure.

Police said a Forest Avenue resident phoned police after a neighbor’s dogs had escaped and chased somebody down the street Monday around 6:45 a.m.

The reporting resident told police they were afraid to have children play in the neighborhood.

Animal control was notified and the homeowner was tracked down to get the dogs back on the property.

Police said nobody was bitten; Essex does not have a dog leash or restraint ordinance.

Police are seeking a criminal complaint against an Essex resident for driving without a valid license.

Police had stopped Peter Townsend, 47, of Lowe Hill Road Monday on Western Avenue around 6:45 a.m.
