A Rockport man was fined more than $2,000 in Gloucester District Court on Tuesday in a case where he faced multiple counts of possessing firearms without a license.
Judge Joseph Jennings ordered Ted Hecht, 59, of 3 Highview Road, to pay a $2,250 fine to the state for 44 counts of possessing a firearm without a valid license.
Hecht also faced 11 charges of possessing a high-capacity firearm without a license, but the state declined to prosecute. The 44 charges were decriminalized in court yesterday.
The charges stem from a May 2011 arrest on a charge of domestic assault and battery. When police arrested Hecht after he allegedly assaulted a woman who was staying with him, they found that his Class A firearms license had expired seven months prior.
Because of the arrest and the license expiration, Hecht gave officers permission to remove his firearms and ammunition from the residence, Police removed 47 firearms and 150,000 rounds of ammunition from the home.
A Gloucester man was sentenced to serve a year in Middleton Jail in court after he pleaded guilty Tuesday to assault and battery charges.
Jennings sentenced Jason Ramalho, 28, of 7 Pond Road, to 21/2 years in jail, but with the single year to serve, 156 days credit and the rest suspended through August 2014.
Ramalho faced charges of assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, vandalizing property, and larceny.
Police arrested Ramalho last September, after he assaulted a woman staying with him. Police reports said the two had gotten into an argument while intoxicated. It also states that the woman told police Ramalho had broken her phone and stolen $350.
A Gloucester man pleaded guilty to shoplifting and stealing lobsters.
William Strobacz, 38, of no known address, pleaded guilty to a charge of shoplifting and the separate theft of lobsters.
Police arrested him for stealing lobsters in November 2010 at the Jodrey State Fish Pier, and put a warrant out for his arrest last March for stealing a bottle of vodka from Railroad Liquors on Railroad Avenue.
A charge of malicious destruction of property brought against a Gloucester man was continued without a finding Tuesday.
Jennings continued the charge, brought against Michael Milner, 21, of 34 Millet St., without a finding until next January.
Police reports indicate that Milner had gotten into an argument with a woman staying with him and broke her phone, laptop and headphones last month. He left before police arrived.
Breaking and entering charges filed against a Gloucester man were continued without a finding.
Robert Dodge, 20, of 7 Arthur St., Gloucester, admitted to sufficient facts regarding a breaking and entering charge, but Jennings continued the charge without a finding until August.
Police arrested Dodge along with Dakota Lewis, 20, of 7 Arthur St., and Ross Carlson, 21 of 12 Riggs St, for allegedly breaking into a car on Cherry Street in December 2010.
A charge of unsafe operation of a motor boat brought against Jeffery Diambro, 25, of 8 Winter Road in Woburn, was dismissed pending payment of $100 in court costs yesterday. Diambro was arrested last July on the Annisquam River for excessive speed in a no-wake zone.
A Gloucester man was ordered to pay court costs to have a charge of disturbing the peace dismissed.
Jennings ordered Joshua Hopkinson, 22, of 13 Veterans Way to pay $100 in court costs to dismiss the charge, which stemmed from an Oct. 22 arrest.
Police arrested Hopkinson at the Maplewood Avenue 7-Eleven after receiving a call that he and two other men were threatening to beat up someone in the store. Police found him in the doorway blocking the entrance and threatening the person who called about the incident.
