A Gloucester woman who was a noted relief activist has been killed in a West Coast car crash, along with the driver of the vehicle in which she was riding.
Elise Hansen, 45, of East Main Street, died at the scene of a 5:30 p.m. Tuesday accident on Oregon's Highway 97 near Crescent, Ore., according to police reports from that community.
According to the police press statement, Hansen was riding in a car driven by Mark Hansen, 59, of Talmadge, Calif., when he apparently lost control of the car on what were described as icy roads and their vehicle collided with another car.
Both Hansens were killed in the crash, while the driver of the other vehicle, Lisa Daniels, 47, of Post Falls, Idaho, and her 13-year-old daughter and passenger were injured. Daniels and her daughter, however, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
In Gloucester, Hansen, who lived on East Main Street, worked for a nonprofit group called KONPAY, which coordinates help for Haiti with the aim of supporting Haitian-led efforts. KONPAY stands for Konbit Pou Ayiti — Working Together for Haiti in Haitian Creole.
Hansen worked as KONPAY's U.S. coordinator, and organized trips to Haiti for those looking to learn more about the country and the culture.
Hansen was also the sister of Erika Hansen, the founder of Cape Ann Business Incubator, a local entrepreneurial group.
Any relationship between the two Hansens killed in the crash was unclear.
