St. Ann School closing at end of school year

St. Ann School will close its doors at the end of the academic year, after schooling many generations of Gloucester’s families during its 128 years operating in the community.

In a letter sent to parents last night, Board of Trustees chair Joseph Parisi III, cited a drop in enrollment, from a high of 189 students in 2010 to 90 students this year, as the reason for the closure.

”Despite the best efforts of St. Ann’s leadership enrollment has declined,” Parisi wrote. “The school’s projected enrollment, with an average of fewer than eight students per grade, cannot sustain the school.”

The loss of tuition revenue would also “compromise” the school’s ability to secure grants and financial assistance, Parisi wrote.

For parents, many disheartened at seeing the beloved school close, St. Ann’s will host an open house with information about other Catholic schools next Thursday, May 2, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Also, the Catholic Schools Office will work with St. Ann’s teachers and staff to help some find positions at other Catholic schools.

“There are many wonderful memories to remind us of the many good years that St. Ann’s has served our community. With this announcement we recognize our loss,” Parisi wrote. “We also take time (to) celebrate all that we have achieved and treasure these achievements and honor our students, teachers, staff, and alumni.”
