Turbine work back on track

With skies clearing after Post-Tropical Cyclone Sandy, construction work on the giant wind turbine at the Varian Division of Applied Materials has kicked back up at Blackburn Industrial Park.

And both the working turbine tower and the massive boom of the crane putting it together were visible across the Gloucester skyline Wednesday afternoon.

Mark Baldwin, owner of Baldwin Crane, the company erecting the turbines, said that, while losing a few days because of the storm, crews had to bring down the two massive cranes, one at Varian and the other at Cruiseport Gloucester because of Sandy’s high winds.

”We lost significant time preparing the cranes for the storm, but now that it has passed we’re back on the same schedule,” Baldwin said.

Wednesday, crews put up the last tower section on the 2.5 megawatt turbine at Varian. Friday, Baldwin said, they’ll put up the drive train and assemble the rotor over the weekend. Come Monday, he said, crews hope to assemble the rotor and blades, weather permitting.

Baldwin Crane will start erecting the first of two turbines at Gloucester Engineering on Nov. 9.
