Rockport Ramblings: Crossing guard bows out with many thanks

Crossing guard Beryl Barnes retired Friday following 12 to 13 years of helping kids to navigate the town’s busiest crossroads before and after school.

The students, who adoringly refer to Barnes as B.B., thanked her with owl-shaped cupcakes on her last day of service, choosing the owl characteristic because “she keeps an eye on us,” they said. Kids also gifted African violets, cake and balloons.

Barnes, who began working as a crossing guard to keep busy after retiring, said she never saw an accident on her watch.

The Rockport Garden Club’s annual meeting at the Rockport Community House will begin at 11:30 a.m. Monday.

The demonstration begins at 1:15 p.m.

The town’s Community Preservation Committee is planning its usual fall workshop for applicants interested in 2013 CPA funding for Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m., at the police station’s community room.

In addition to being able to fund projects that enhance life in Rockport by supporting worthy historic restoration and preservation projects as well as community housing projects, the commission now have been given the opportunity to support open space and recreation projects that might be on land not purchased with CPA funds, thanks to a vote of the state legislature this past July.
