Gloucester Daily Times

---- — Eight-term congressman John Tierney, caught up in the race of his life against Republican challenger and former state Sen. Richard Tisei is clinging to an early lead among the first election returns, piling up a significant edge in Gloucester as he seeks to retain his 6th District seat.

With 6 of the 10 precincts reporting in Gloucester, Tierney had racked up 7,843 votes to Tisei’s 3,609, claiming Ward 1 Precinct 1 by a count of 1,044 to 640, and sweeping Ward 3 with a 770 to 412 in Precinct 1 and by a count of 774 to 510 in Precinct 2.

In unofficial totals, Tisei has won the vote in Danvers — home base of former Congressman Peter Torkildsen, whose Super PAC was behind some of the aggressive anti-Tierney campaign mailings — by a count of 7,000 to Tierney’s 6,408, leaving the pair with unofficial totals of Tierney’s 14,457 to 10,609.
