City voters play Dems' party line

Gloucester hewed a hard Democratic line in Monday’s election.

Voters lifted President Obama to a near 2-to-1 margin over former Gov. Mitt Romney.

They gave Harvard professor Elizabeth Warren a comfortable margin of more than 600 voters out of more than 15,000 cast locally in her successful race to end Republican Sen. Scott Brown’s partial term in the seat left by the death of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

And they gave Congressman John Tierney a 23-percent margin over former Republican state Sen. Richard Tisei of Wakefield.

Tierney’s margin in Gloucester — 3,057 votes of 15,157 cast — was attributed to his defense of the veterans and the fishing industry, two special groups with extraordinary representation in Gloucester.

”Congressmen are judged by their delivery to the community,” said Mark Nestor, a Vietnam War helicopter pilot and organizer of Monday’s Veteran’s Day memorial event. “He delivered for the veterans and the fishermen, and people remembered that and appreciated it,” Nestor added.

Tierney resides in Salem, but has adopted the fishing industry as a congressional project he shared with outgoing Rep. Barney Frank, whose district includes New Bedford.

Tisei was considered a favorite to end Tierney’s congressional career at eight terms, 16 years, after he and his financial investors from the National Republican Campaign Committee and its Young Guns subsidiary of ideological conservatives hammered Tierney with millions of dollars in advertising that attempted to sully his reputation with allusions that he had known about or somehow been involved in the illicit offshore gambling business operated by his brother in law.

Tierney’s wife Patrice pleaded guilty to willful ignorance in aiding and abetting the filing of false income taxes for her brother Robert Eremian, who is still a fugitive.

The third candidate in the race, Daniel Fisheman, a Beverly Libertarian took 5.1 percent of the vote.
