A Gloucester mail carrier pleaded guilty to a charge of distributing obscene material Tuesday, a year after police said he had stolen a Washington Street woman's cell phone and used it to take photos of his genitals while running his mail route.
Gloucester District Court Judge Joseph Jennings placed Joseph Sauve, 47, of Beacon Street, on probation until Feb. 15, 2013. Sauve, represented by attorney Edward Pasquina, also faced a larceny charge stemming from his September 2010 arrest, but it had been dismissed at the request of the commonwealth.
Jennings also ordered him to stay away from the woman who owns the cell phone. Postal officials said that Sauve is no longer a postal employee and, as such, "we have no further comment than that."
Police arrested Sauve in September 2010 after the woman reported that her phone had been stolen from her mailbox.
The woman told police she set her phone down on her mailbox and went to do something indoors. When she stepped out, according to the report, her phone was gone and her mail had arrived. The woman said she thought the mail carrier might have picked it up.
Police found Suave down the road, tapping away at the phone. He told officers he was trying to figure out who's phone it was so he could return it. But when officers took it back to the woman, she found six pictures of a penis stored in the phone that she said weren't there before.
Detectives found that one of the photos had been sent to a friend of the woman via e-mail through the phone's contact list.
According to police reports, officers could see what appeared to be mail carrier's shorts in two of the pictures. Police reports state that the photographs were taken sometime between 2:27 and 2:40 p.m. — the period police believe Sauve had the phone in his possession.
