Gloucester Police/Fire: Police probe theft of purses from church pews

Gloucester Police/Fire

A woman reported her purse and others stolen from the pews of the Methodist church on Main Street during a ceremony Tuesday evening.

The woman told police that when she and others stepped forward to be blessed, someone took “several” purses left behind in the pews.

The woman reporting the theft said she had noticed a “strange” man sitting in the back of the church prior to the larcen, and that man was gone when she returned to her seat.

Police received a report of a man trying to rob people at knife point Tuesday about 1:41 a.m. in the Addison Street area.

Officers searched the area, but found no person matching the caller’s description.
