Mass. electric car owners to get specialty plates

BOSTON — Drivers of electric cars will soon be able to get their own electric vehicle license plates in Massachusetts.

State Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs Richard Sullivan is planning to unveil the new license plates Tuesday at the Porter Square Shopping Center in Cambridge.

Sullivan said Massachusetts is only the second state in the country to adopt the specialty plates for electric cars.

State Secretary of Transportation Richard Davey will join Sullivan at the event which will also celebrate the installation of new electric vehicle charging stations in Porter Square.

The plates are part of the Patrick administration's statewide efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and invest in transportation that takes advantage of renewable energy sources.

Registrar of Motor Vehicles Rachel Kaprielian will also be on hand for the announcement.
