Sea Cadets group accepting new recruits

A local group has openings for youngsters interested in learning basic seamanship and military skills.

The Minuteman Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets Corps is open to 11- to 17-year-olds in Gloucester, Essex, Manchester and Rockport.

The non-school-based extra-curricular program, run through the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, is aimed at developing interest and skill in seamanship, and to teach patriotism, courage and self-reliance.

Lecturers are invited to present to cadets the wide range of civilian and military career opportunities available. There is no obligation to join any military component upon graduation.

The program runs between September and June, with camp and away training periods between June and August. The Naval Sea Cadet Corps supports education by offering scholarships for graduating seniors who are interested in going to college or beyond.

There are volunteer opportunities for adults as well.

Informational meetings are held regularly at Gloucester High School, 32 Leslie O Johnson Road.
