An Essex man was placed on probation Monday until September 2013 in the wake of a December incident in which he was charged with assault and battery on an 84-year-old man.
The incident began when Salvatore Carrao of 52 Eastern Ave. in Essex was accused, by family, of taking a generator that belonged to his father.
During the dispute, according to an Essex police report, Carrao's 84-year-old father tried to restrain him, and Carrao pushed and shoved his way out of the restraining hug. Carrao also allegedly punched other family members during the fight, according to the report.
Police who responded found Carrao had a small folding pocket knife and a can of pepper spray, according to the report, and charged him with illegally possessing the spray, which is regulated as permitted weapon.
Veterans Affairs will address anger management and substance abuse issues with Carrao, as ordered by Judge Joseph Jennings on Monday in Gloucester District Court.
