MANCHESTER — A local resident has been named to the North Shore Community College Board of Trustees
Martha C. Farmer of Manchester was appointed by Gov. Deval Patrick to serve on the as a trustee of the college which has campuses in Danvers and Lynn.
Farmer is the president, CEO and co-founder of North Shore InnoVentures, a nonprofit business incubator for life sciences and cleantech start-ups, operating the Biotech InnoVenture Center in Beverlyand the Cleantech InnoVenture Center in Lynn.
Formerly with Baxter Healthcare's Hemoglobin Therapeutics Division for 11 years, Farmer shifted from managing a research laboratory to directing product development, marketing and communications.
She also co-founded the radiopharmaceutical start-up, BetaGamma LLC, serving as vice president of marketing.
She has since served as a consultant with several other companies, the Department of Defense and the National Institutes of Health on blood substitutes, liposome encapsulation and most recently on stem cell research, bioethics and commercialization.
Farmer has a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology, a doctorate in physiology and pharmacology from Duke University, and postdoctoral training in biophysics from Johns Hopkins University. She is the author of more than 30 publications and three patents.
Established in 1965, North Shore Community College is one of the oldest and largest of the 15 community colleges in the state Massachusetts. It serves 26 cities and towns, including the Cape Ann communities of Gloucester, Rockport, Manchester and Essex.
