Bring on the beards, Sox fans!

ZZ Top, Santa Claus, Duck Dynasty and Abe Lincoln.

These are some of the beard styles we’ve already received from across the North Shore as we begin our “A Beard for Boston” Red Sox playoff beard contest.

Who knew grandmothers and kindergartners could grow such wild beards?

The Red Sox have been sporting their good-luck beards as they’ve marched through a record-setting turnaround season.

After last year’s disastrous 69-93 season, this was supposed to be a rebuilding year. So, the reason for the stunning turnaround — the Sox won the American League East title and have posted the best record in baseball — must have been the lucky beards.

With a bit of David Ortiz power, Dustin Pedroia grit, Jacoby Ellsbury speed and Koji Uehara relief magic added for good measure.

Judging by the early returns, we have no shortage of passionate Red Sox fans with senses of humor.

And props!

The Gloucester Daily Times will continue to run your beard pictures throughout the playoffs and the anticipated Duck Boat parade.

We may be getting a bit ahead of ourselves, but with the good luck provided by the Times’ beard-wearing fans, a World Series championship seems inevitable, doesn’t it?

HAIRY SEASON Do you have a beard -- real or fake -- that ought to be featured in the Gloucester Daily Times to show support for the Red Sox? Email a hi-res jpg, along with your name, residence and caption information, to Special Projects Director
