WASHINGTON — Police say a lockdown placed on the U.S. Capitol and other nearby buildings -- issued after reports that multiple shots were fired outside the building -- has been lifted as authorities continue to investigate the incident.

According to reports, the incident began several blocks away, when a female driver in a black vehicle approached a security checkpoint at The White House and words were exchanged. Reporte indicated that the motorist drove away, strikng a police vehicle in the process. Police then pursued the driver, who had a child in the car, toward the Capitol.

The driver then crashed into a barricade outside the Capitol, and police pursued the driver, with shots reportedlyu fired.

People standing outside the Supreme Court across the street from Congress were hurried into the court building by authorities, and authorities issued a “shelter in place” order, meaning that no one was being allowed to either enter or exit the Capitol or the other nearby buildings.

U.S. Capitol police said they had received reports of gunshots and that at least one police officer had been injured. There were also reports that the driver was hit as well.
