Gloucester Police/Fire: Four charged in Maplewood Avenue melee

Gloucester Police/Fire

Four city residents were arrested after police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a fight Wednesday about 6 p.m near the intersection of Derby Court and Maplewood Avenue.

Arrested were:

Matteo J. Briguglio, 36, of Cleveland Street, on charges of assault and battery on a police officer, disorderly conduct, and domestic assault and battery.

Giuseppe Sclafani, 30, and Joanne C. Sclafani, 25, both of Gale Road, on charges of disorderly conduct and domestic assault and battery.

Amra E. Sclafani, 29, of Elwell Street, on charges of disorderly conduct and domestic assault and battery.

According to police, officers broke up the fight between the two women after arriving on scene, but then one woman punched the other and the fighting began again.

While an officer separated the women, Briguglio allegedly jumped on Giuseppe Sclafani and began to “pound his head with a closed fist.”

Briguglio “elbowed” an officer in the chest and left eye, as the officer attempted to separate the men, according to the report. Police eventually used pepper spray when the group would not obey their commands.

Police filed a report with the Department of Children and Families against two involved whose shared child witnessed the fight and was left nearby in a stroller.

A city animal control officer driving a department van on Eastern Avenue struck a stopped motor vehicle when he was reportedly “distracted” Wednesday about 11:30 a.m.

According to a police report, the animal control officer and the driver of the other vehicle agreed there was no damage to either vehicle and both the officer and the 21-year-old whose car he struck were uninjured.

A third-party officer wrote that a dog in the animal control van had apparently distracted the officer, causing him to strike the vehicle that was parked in traffic.

A 15-year-old struck by a slow-moving vehicle on Main Street Wednesday afternoon escaped the accident with no injuries.
