Ward 5 candidates kick off Times debates tonight

First-time Gloucester City Council candidates William Fonvielle and Scotadam Chernov will kick off two nights of Gloucester Daily Times debates tonight when they field questions and debate the issues beginning at 6:15 p.m. at Gloucester Stage Company’s Gorton’s Theatre.

The 30-minute debate between Fonvielle and Chernov, who are battling for the Ward 5 council seat in the city’s Nov. 4 elections, will be the first of three such debates tonight, with Ward 2 candidates Melissa Cox and Ann Frontiero Mulcahey debating their ward’s and other city issues in another 30-minute forum at 7 p.m.

The final debate tonight, a one-hour debate set for 8 p.m., will feature all eight candidates seeking the four councilor-at-large seats: Joe Ciolino, Sefatia Romeo Theken, Robert Whynott, Steve Curcuru, Dennis Latham, Paul Lundberg, Greg Verga and Robert Whitmarsh.

All of the Times debates are free and open to the public, and all of the questions posed by debate moderator Ray Lamont, editor of the Times, will be based on submissions by Times readers over the last 10 days.

The Times debates will continue on Thursday, with mayor candidates Carolyn Kirk and Mac Bell squaring off starting at 8 p.m. after the nine School Committee candidates engage in their debate starting at 6:30.

That race includes Kathleen Clancy, Tony Gross, Jonathan Pope and Melissa Joy Teixeira, Joel Favazza, J.D. MacEachern Jr., Hannah Scialdone Kimberley, Jack O’Maley, Michelle Sweet.

Each of the Times debates will also be recorded and televised at a later date by Cape Ann TV. All of the Times debates are also set for Gloucester Stage, located at 267 East Main St. in East Gloucester.
