The Gloucester-based filmmakers whose documentary "short" on the St. Peter's Fiesta Greasy Pole Walk earned an international film festival award this past spring will showcase their work at Saturday's Block Party.
While working on a full-length documentary about Fiesta's sports centerpiece event, they're also sharing highlights of footage from this year's Pole competition on both a local blog and their own Web site geared toward promoting the film.
Emile Doucette — who, along with Michael Pallazola and Tom Papows, earned the acclaimed Documentrary Educational Resources Award at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Film Festival in Toronto — will be presenting their short film at the Block Party as part of a multimedia series of events to be held from 8 to 11 at the corner of Main and Center streets.
They will also air the final clip of eight from their Greasy Pole 2009 footage as the culmination of "Eight Days of Greasy Pole." The series is running one clip at a time this week on the filmmakers' Web site, greasypoledoc.com, and on Joe Ciaramitaro's blog, goodmorningloucester, com, which can be accessed separately or though the community blog links at gloucestertimes.com. The group's Block Party presentation also includes the previous clips in the eight-day series.
"We shot a ton of footage during this year's 2009 Greasy Pole competition," Doucette said, "and before we shelve it for the long-term documentary we're working on over the next year, we couldn't resist sharing some highlights."
The short-form documentary, simply titled "The Greasy Pole," beat out more than 130 other teams from around the world to win the¬ Toronto Festival's Educational Resources Award. Now, Doucette, Pallazola and Papows are working with the Documentary Educational Resources organization to secure funding for the extended film, which will include the 2009 Greasy Pole footage. Doucette said the group hopes to create the longer film to be aired on broadcast television.
"The process of acquiring funding will happen over the next year, and we hope to meet our budget goal by Fiesta 2010," Doucette said.
Anyone interested in contributing to the documentary — whether through financial contributions, photos or video from past Greasy Pole competitions, or sharing stories about the competition — should contact the group through info@greasypoledoc.com.
