Essex Police/Fire: Second woman falls for phone scam

ESSEX — Another Main Street woman has told police she fell for an over-the-phone scam.

The woman reported the scam Monday around 9:45 p.m.

Police said this scam involves the caller informing the resident that he or she has won a sum of money, and asks him or her to purchase a prepaid debit card and then relay the card information over the phone to receive the prize.

There have been many similar phone scams relayed to Essex police in the past few days.

Another Main Street woman reported Monday night that she fell for a phone scam, this one asking that a National Grid bill be paid with a prepaid credit card.

Police as well as National Grid advise that anyone receiving any suspicious phone call about threatening to shut off electricity unless a payment is made prepaid card to call police at 978-768-6200 and National Grid directly.

A Main Street woman was dropped off at the police station by a taxi cab company for being intoxicated on Wednesday at 2:40 a.m., police said.

Police then placed the woman under protective custody.
