Tests clean; city lifts swimming ban at Pavilion Beach

Based on bacteria test results received earlier this morning, the city of Gloucester has lifted the ban on swimming ban at Pavilion Beach that had been put into in effect yesterday.

The beach was closed as a precautionary measure yesterday following Monday night’s heavy rainfall and what city officials described as combined sewer overflow “event.”

Max Schenk, the city’s manager of Environmental Health Services, said this morning, however, that the results of tests taken later Tuesday show that the levels of bacteria are now below the state maximum. The bacteria, called enterococci, which can increase the likelihood of infection, has 62 colony forming units, or living organisms, in 100 milliliters of water, Schenk said.

The state’s Department of Public Health states that any beach must be closed for swimming if there are more than 104 colony forming units per 100 milliliters of water. The state guidelines had also forced temporary closures at Gloucester’s Plum Cove Beach, and at West Beach and Tuck’s Point beaches, both in Manchester.
